Planning your USB extension project

Why do people need a good USB extension cable for their laptops? That one is easy in my mind: People need USB extensions for a variety of reasons, mostly having to do with external peripherals such as printers, cameras, hard drives, and all sorts of other things that they might use when using a laptop at their home or workplace. The most common need for an extension is to keep all of those peripherals away from your workspace; if you’re sitting at a desk, would you want to have a printer almost on your lap? Of course not: You’d want to put it away from yourself so that you can effectively use your workspace. That’s where a USB cable extension comes into play: It removes all of that clutter from your surrounding area, increasing productivity.

How long should this extension actually be? You need to plan this out before you head off to the store or go shopping online. Often it may appear that you only need so many feet, but when it comes time to actually do the job you realize that you didn’t quite get the proper length of cord. The worst is when you accidentally get one that’s just a little too short; in that case, you really didn’t accomplish anything at all. If you do that, you’re forced to start all over again. Too long of cables, and you’re going to need to have to hide a ton of that cable to keep from looking like your workplace is a complete disaster area. You don’t want to do that. You want your workspace to look clean and tidy, don’t you?

Definitely get out a tape measure and work all of the dimensions out before you get started. You’ll want to make sure to keep in mind any corners in your office/room; this can throw your estimations all off if you didn’t actually use a tape measure. Write down your measurements and take it to the store with you. Sometimes there will be someone there to help you decide which cable best suits your needs.

When it comes time for you to start your USB extension cord project, make sure that you have all the correct fasteners and tools available right away. This will keep your project running smoothly. Using staples (large staples!) and other fasteners such as tie wraps will definitely help you keep all of those cables you’re using in a proper and manageable order. You may even consider labeling each of the extension cables for future reference. Getting a Belkin USB extension cable is usually best for this; they come with tags attached sometimes.

Good luck!
