Buying a cool USB light

If you’re into trying something really cool, check out a USB light. What is a USB light exactly? Trust me, if you’ve never even heard of one, you’ll really want one just as soon as I’m done talking about it. :) These USB lights are small lights that give you just a little extra light when you’re working on your laptop. They fit into your standard USB port and are generally bendable to shine light right on your keyboard, your paperwork, homework, whatever. Cool, right? Yep, we think so.

A computer USB light is directly powered by your laptop itself. No batteries, no plugging it in. All you need is the light itself (with the included USB adapter), and you’re all set. The USB bus on your laptop actually provides power to the light, which really doesn’t cause much of an extra drain on your system at all (much less than something like a hard drive, trust me).  These “bendy” types can be shone wherever you’d like them to be. On your keyboard? Easy. On something you’re working on to the side of your notebook? Sure thing, no problem. This is definitely a great little investment if you bring your laptop to class with you. Imagine being able to sit in a darkened auditorium taking notes with a light on that doesn’t bother anyone else. That’s what you get with this, and for a low price.

So, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty: How much are these really useful USB lights? You might expect something as high-tech as this to cost an arm and a leg, but you’d be wrong.

USB lights typically go for less than $20, with the higher end ones generally being LED instead of incandescent. To be honest, I bet you’d have a tough time finding normal light bulbs this small; stick with the LEDs if you can! These USB lights also come in blue, so check that out as well.

One great little light we’ve found through a little research that you might like is the USB FlexLight. This little wonder costs about $10, and features a design that doesn’t disturb everyone around you (it’s a very focused light). It’s got a 100,000 hour LED already installed (that’s right: it’ll last that long!), which removes any need to keep replacing bulbs. The best thing about this is that it’s one of those flexy lights I was talking about before: You can aim it just about anywhere you’d like and it’ll work just fine.
