If you’ve ever owned Vista laptops, you’d probably know that they might not always be the best on the market. Vista has been known to be an over-bloated contraption that’s not exactly Microsoft’s best work. Is that a well-deserved reputation? Well, I’m not so sure at this point. While some of the lower-end laptops on the market with Vista can hardly run the thing, higher-end models do just fine, and show that Vista shouldn’t be avoided outright. So, why has there been such a stigma up to this point? Let’s talk about it.

Vista takes up a lot of system resources, and an obnoxious amount of memory on low end systems. For example, my current laptop running Vista Home Edition is currently using 900 MB of memory with only a few applications open (Excel, Firefox, AIM, and well, that’s about it really). If my system had only 1GB of memory from the start I’d be toast right about now. With 512 MB of RAM or less, well, as Vinny says, fuggidaboutit. There’d be no way to run Vista on that type of laptop at all.

But with a laptop with 2GB of RAM, you’d have a much better chance of it if you’re not a gamer. If you’re a gamer you might want to consider something with 3GB or more if you’re running Windows Vista, but that’s not unheard of (or expensive) at this point in time. That all can be acquired for cheap as long as you have a laptop motherboard that will handle that amount of RAM. You can use Google to search for that. That won’t be hard.

For unconventional hardware, Vista actually does pretty well. If your laptop with Vista has some kind of new DVD-RW that perhaps just came out onto the market, there’s a good chance that Vista will recognize it without a fuss. After all, they do a pretty good job of recognizing even Apple products such as an iPhone. That’s dedication to users right there.

Above all that, Microsoft has done a pretty good job at making Vista more user friendly than the old Windows 2000/XP systems that used to be standard. Certainly you’ll be scratching your head just a bit for the first few minutes as you get used to how the operating system is set up (i.e. there’s no more “My Documents” folder, per se), but once you get it Vista really isn’t too terribly difficult.

So, that’s what I have to say about that. Vista laptops are actually solid should you decide to go with a higher end model. Do that and you should be set.
