What are some 12″ laptop choices?

I’ll say this right now: If you’re looking for a 12″ laptop, it won’t be easy to find. This oft-ignored screen size has become popular with the crowd of people who have opinions in-between that of the mainstream: They want laptops that are functional and travel well, but don’t want to resort to those little netbooks you can’t even type on without accidentally hitting the wrong key. That’s not to say that the smaller laptops aren’t any good; that’s not at all what I’m saying at all. Those mini notebooks are very good at what they do: They get you online and checking your email. To some people that’s not enough. We agree.

A quick search done on Google for 12″ laptops comes up with very little. Wie Schade. Don’t worry, I’ve done a bit more digging and found a few laptops that come with a 12″ screen. And with monthly laptop financing, the up-front cost can be eased quite a bit.

The first one that should be mentioned is the HP TouchSmart tx2z series computers. This is actually a hybrid laptop-tablet design that allows a user to use his/her fingers, a stylus, or other such implements to interface with the system. It also comes with a normal keyboard attached so that you don’t always have to deal with a touch screen tablet PC if you don’t want to. It also features a swivel screen that allows you to convert from tablet to normal notebook and back again. You can even turn the screen any direction you want so that you can show people your screen without needing to have them come over to you. Perfect for business presentations! This HP 12″ laptop packs a lot of punch.

Another laptop with a 12″ screen you should look into is the Averatec N2700 series. This notebook comes in the 12-inch format just like the HP version, but isn’t a semi-tablet like that model. This is a no-frills laptop that’s actually marketed as a netbook itself. I wholly disagree on the idea that this is one of those “ultraportables.” The 12″ screen is big enough to watch movies on, and is actually bulky enough itself to be called a regular ol’ laptop. It’s okay, we won’t tell. This laptop is actually fully featured, and can come with upwards of a 2GHz processor. The only thing you don’t get is the 16:9 screen ratio that you get with other screen sizes.
