Believe it or not, the Sony VAIO once came as a 12″ laptop (well, more accurately, laptops with 12.1″ screens). This was once a very popular system, but these days it’s been discontinued and instead replaced with 13″ and larger laptops. That’s okay though, because you can still buy VAIO refurbished laptops for cheap in the 12″ flavor. Their loss is your gain, really. The VAIO V505BCK1 is a popular refurbished model that you should look into. Prices vary, but this computer comes with a 2GHz Pentium 4 processor, 40GB hard drive, a 16 MB video card, and 256 MB of DDR RAM. No, those specs aren’t what you’d normally expect from a modern laptop; they’re what you’d expect from the refurbished variety that you can get for seriously cheap.
I’m not sure what the price range you’d be looking at for one of these used (or having just been sitting unused in some warehouse), but I can’t imagine it being more than about $500. Go on the web and find what you can find. The best part about getting such a cheap laptop is that with proper work, the upgrade potential is there to really turn it into something blistering fast for not a lot of money at all. Do keep in mind that you need to do some research on what the motherboard can handle. You don’t want to pick up your laptop and then find out that you can’t put in more than 256MB of RAM…that’s a serious waste of money if you use it for graphics-intensive work such as games.
If you’re looking for even cheaper, look into the Sony VAIO V505 EC29. This is also one of those discontinued 12 inch laptops, but can be bought for next to nothing on the refurbished market just like the one above. This one is a bit less powerful though: It has a 1.5 GHz Pentium 4 processor, 256 MB of RAM, and a 40GB hard drive. All you lose is about 500 MHz of processor speed and save a couple hundred dollars in the process.
Guys, 12″ laptops are a little hard to find, but they can still be found if you’re alright with going used. Good luck.
