Have you ever felt the need to get away from that ridiculous touchpad and into a wireless mouse? I know how you feel: I’ve owned two laptops now with the touchpad, and it’s not fun. Half the time while you’re typing your hands are going to be touching the pad, making your mouse skew all over the screen. Even worse is if you have “double tap” enabled (so you can just touch the pad to click on things instead of pressing the buttons, you’ll start to accidentally click all sorts of links you didn’t mean to do in the first place. It’s not fun, and if you run ads on your site, it can be a quick way to get your account suspended.

For games, not having a wireless mouse is going to be a hindrance. You just can’t do the same things with a touchpad as you can with a good wireless optical mouse. Your movements aren’t going to be as fluid, and the sensitivity afforded by the touchpad just isn’t what you can expect from a proper mouse specifically designed for sensitivity and smoothness. You can try it all you want, but you just won’t get there!

So, what should you look for in a mouse, particularly if you’re using it for gaming? The first thing you should look at is the tracking resolution of the mouse itself. Obviously, the higher the better in this case. A better resolution is going to allow your mouse to track smoother and with more fluidity. This is also good because the sensitivity will increase. For games such as first person shooters this is a must. You just can’t get away with using touchpads for these types of games. You really need a wireless laser mouse.

What else should you look for? Functionality and ergonomics. You need to make sure that the mouse you’re picking out will suit your needs as far as all the buttons and functionality are concerned.

If you’re using programs (such as games, or something like CAD) that require a lot of button use, you may want to buy a wireless mouse that has a number of buttons that are programmable for what you need them to do. You don’t have to get fancy with this; as long as it’ll work for your personal situation, you don’t need to buy the one with 15 buttons on each side. Keep it simple.

Lastly, when looking at a wireless laptop mouse (what you’re going to be using it for no doubt), you need to have something that’s going to fit in your hand and not give you carpal tunnel from its use. Make sure you consider whether it’s a left or right handed mouse, and test it before you take it home. Good luck!
